Sending your senior away to college is not easy

Jan 17, 2026

As our children prepare to leave for college, many of us find ourselves feeling unsure, emotional, and even a little overwhelmed. You’re not alone. I have asked parents if they felt ready, most said no- and that honestly speaks volumes. This season brings a mix of emotions for both parents and students: excitement, sadness, anxiety, pride and uncertainty all wrapped together. Questions fill our minds- Will they be okay? Will they feel lonely? How often will we talk? If you’re feeling this way, know that it is normal. Letting go is hard and loving deeply makes it even harder. This is a season on transition and it’s okay to feel all of it. Mamas supporting mamas- because none of us are meant to walk this season alone.

Over the years, I’ve had the honor of meeting so many families through my work as a photographer. Again and again, I see families standing in the middle of a meaningful transition- watching their children grow, change, and prepare to step into independence. My own family has walked this season too. When our sons left for college, each experience was different but none of them were easy. Those moments made me deeply aware of how quickly time moves and how important it is to hold onto the season you’re in while you’re living it. Family and senior portraits are more than photographs. They are a way to pause time, to honor the journey that brought you here and to remember the connection you share before the next chapter begins. These images become reminders of love, growth and the story you’ve written together as a family.
